“It’s a love thing” I say when asked “why Shetlands”? Not long after my first two ewes arrived on our ranch … I was smitten, awed and in love. I chose Shetland Sheep for all the reasons that made sense to me: natural hardiness, good mothers, easy lambing, gorgeous fleeces in many colors and small in size, making them reasonable for me to tend to them. Perfect! I had no idea how perfect. After having Shetlands now for years I have found them to be all this and more. Not all my Shetlands are “sit in your lap friendly” but all of them are sweet, good natured and many do want to sit in my lap! I had no idea how calming, loving and giving my sheep could be. After a long day I can sit out on a hay bale with my girls gathered around looking for scratches under the chin and have a small chat about the day.
